The Upper Sunshine Coast Features a number of golf courses including the Les Furber designed Myrtle Point championship course and a Nine Hole executive course, Nootka Dunes in Upper Westview in the City of Powell River.
Myrtle Point Golf Course
Nestled amidst the Coast Mountains and the shores of Malaspina Strait is an exceptional site on the upper Sunshine Coast that is a wonderful treat for many visitors. Myrtle Point Golf Course is located five minutes south of Powell River is a golfers paradise. This superbly conditioned layout designed by one of Canada's pre-eminent golf architects, Les Furber, provides the location for a great game of golf.
From the back tees, Myrtle Point is a true championship course at almost 7,000 yards. Myrtle Point offers every player a delightful round in one of the most natural settings imaginable. Bald eagles soar over head and the resident elk, white-tailed deer and waterfowl add to the enjoyment of the course. Golfers can play the course year-round thanks to the temperate weather effect created by Malaspina Strait.
“It is really an unspoiled, virtually untouched area,” say visitors. “There is wildlife all around and fabulous ocean views, with Texada Island and the snow-capped mountains over on Vancouver Island adding to the experience.”
The tees are just as captivating. Each hole seems to stand out on its own. Laid out in the dense coastal forest - all but four holes are tree-lined - with subtle mounding, the course is dotted with ponds and shimmering trout run in Deighton Creek that comes into view and play on five holes and the ninth fairway.
It is a very, very strategic golf course. If you play it safe, you will shoot some pretty good numbers and be fine. It won't eat up the average player, but, if you are a little more aggressive and want to take some chances, the reward factor is quite substantial. Every hole offers some of the risk and reward of strategic choice, and as a result, the shot values are quite high at Myrtle Point.
The par 3 sixth hole is a fine example. With the green nestled into a peninsula jutting into a pond and fully one-third of the green is protected by water and bunkers, but architect Les Furber has designed it to be enjoyed by everyone.
Play 170 yards from the championship tees or a comfortable 129 yards from the regular tees. Once on the superb greens at Myrtle Point, birdies are definite possibilities.
With the challenging course, spectacular views, an inviting clubhouse, lounge and banquet facilities, located in the unique tranquility of the upper Sunshine Coast, it's little wonder that golfers come back again and again to experience Myrtle Point Golf Course.
